Truth is noht in what happens but what it tells us about who we are. Fiction is the lie that tells the truth, after all. — Neil Gaiman
The American High School Theatre Festival chose Fellowship of the Ravens as one of the top programs nationally, inviting us to perform a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August of 2014. We commissioned a new work, Where to Begin, for the occasion.
Our original play, Where to Begin, is a story about telling stories in a world that doesn’t abide them. Eleanor, Joel, and Sadie are three very different heroes wrestling with being very different. Having reached an impasse in their respective journeys, they are called upon by a well-meaning Scribe to relate their stories so far. Unconvinced by the narratives written for the heroes, the Scribe asks instead for the truth — THEIR truth. This ensemble-based piece represents the experiences, rather than the symptoms, of teenage mental health issues by folding in elements of fantasy and storytelling.
The show was performed in New York City; Robbinsville, NJ; and Edinburgh, Scotland during the summer of 2014. In a review on the Fringe website, one audience member said, “There is more wit and insight into adolescent mental health than you might find in a dozen symposia by mental health professional. What this young company of high school students lack in experience they more than make up for in imagination and a surprisingly clear perspective on complex issues. An uplifting hour of theatre from a gifted cast.”
